Withesike, Derwent House

Withesike is a first-floor apartment inside Derwent House in Portinscale, the village just across the river from Keswick, and it suits dogs that travel light and settle quickly. The owners keep spare bowls and a dog bed on hand for anyone who has left their own at home, which is a small thing that saves a trip to the shops on the first evening.

Two dogs can stay, with a surcharge for each, and the practical side of the flat is well judged for a walking holiday: dishwasher, washing machine and dryer, so muddy kit and wet towels do not pile up. Guests travelling with dogs describe it as clean, comfortable and stocked with everything they needed. Being on the first floor does mean stairs, which is worth a thought for an older or a very large dog.

Portinscale puts you a walk of a mile or so from Keswick, with the Derwentwater shoreline path and the lake launch jetties within easy reach, and Catbells, the popular little fell above the western shore, starts nearby. There is no garden of its own, so comfort breaks happen on the walk rather than out of the back door.

Two things to plan for. Off-street parking sits at the rear but is subject to availability, and it has caused the odd headache, so be ready to be flexible on a busy weekend. Kitchen equipment draws the occasional grumble too, pans in particular. Neither counts for much if you are out on the hill all day.
