Brookfield B&B Guest House, Keswick

Brookfield is a small, owner-run bed and breakfast on the edge of Keswick, and it is one of the warmest places in town to bring a dog. The host, Lorna, comes up by name in almost every review, and dog owners describe their pets being greeted as warmly as they are.

The detail guests remember most is breakfast. Alongside a full English and a long spread of cold options, dogs are routinely given their own cooked sausage each morning, a small touch that has clearly become a house tradition. Rooms come stocked with teas, coffees, hot chocolate and snacks, and guests regularly mention how clean and well thought out they are.

The location suits a dog well. There is a small wood across the road for a quick first walk of the day, and the old railway path runs into Keswick in around 10 to 15 minutes, keeping you off the main road. Skiddaw and Blencathra are both close by for longer days out.

The house rules are clear and worth reading before you book. Brookfield takes one small or medium dog per booking, for £5 a night, and dogs stay in the family rooms rather than the doubles. Bring your own bed or blanket and bowls, dry your dog off before coming in, and do not leave it alone in the room unless it is settled. There is no on-site parking, though free on-street spaces are usually available opposite, and some rooms are up two flights of stairs, which an older dog may find hard going. A few guests also found the decor a little dated and noticed traffic noise from the main road.
