Wansfell Lodge, Windermere

Wansfell Lodge sits at Whitecross Bay on the eastern shore of Lake Windermere, in a quiet wooded holiday park between Windermere town and Troutbeck. It is a three-and-a-half-star self-catering lodge, modern inside but comfortable with it, and the lake is a few minutes away on foot. For anyone travelling with a dog the setting is the draw: woodland trails start about a hundred metres from the door, which turns the first walk of the day into a short loop rather than a drive.

Two well-behaved dogs are welcome. Guests travelling with dogs describe the lodge as exceptionally clean and well equipped, with comfortable beds, good showers and a two-sided veranda that earns its keep - somewhere to sit out with the dog while everyone else stays indoors. There is room for four people and two dogs without it feeling tight, and the grounds and neighbouring lodges are kept tidy. The park is quiet enough that wildlife is a regular sight from the veranda, and there is a partial view of the lake from the property itself.

Two practical points come up often enough to plan around. The bedrooms have no curtains and the rooms stay very light, and in midsummer that has been enough to wake a dog at half four in the morning - worth packing a portable blackout if yours rises with the sun. The park WiFi also does not reach the lodge reliably. Neither is a dog-specific problem, but both shape how an early start with a dog actually goes. Housekeeping is the one area where reports vary, so it is worth a quick look round on arrival.

Best suited to a couple or small family with one or two settled dogs who want woodland on the doorstep and a quiet base for Windermere, Bowness and Ambleside, and who do not mind bright early mornings.
