The Hayloft, St Just

The Hayloft is a barn conversion on the edge of St Just, in the far west of Cornwall, sharing its site with a sister cottage and looking out over fields towards Land's End. It is a whole-house rental with a fully enclosed garden, a hot tub and a wood burner, so there are no shared corridors or communal areas to negotiate: you arrive, let the dogs out into a private space and settle in.

Up to two pets are allowed, and parties regularly arrive with two dogs and report room for both. The welcome goes further than tolerance. Guests travelling with dogs mention a hamper that includes treats for the dogs alongside local breakfast produce for everyone else, an entrance area that is genuinely useful for coming in out of the rain with wet dogs, and owners they describe as attentive. A striking number of reviewers are on a second or third stay.

Walks start close by. St Just is about twenty minutes on foot, the mining coast and the far-west beaches are a short drive, and guests with dogs single out the local beaches for early and late outings. Back at the house, the enclosed garden, fire pit and hot tub earn steady praise after a windswept day.

The garden needs a careful read, because reports conflict. Some guests describe dogs they themselves call escape artists being comprehensively defeated by it. Others report a dog getting out through gaps in the low rear boundary and being found near a busy road, which is a serious watch-out rather than a quibble. Both can be true of the same garden depending on the dog and how the boundary has weathered, so walk it before letting a determined dog off the lead. The neighbouring cottage is close by too, and reviews ask visitors to be mindful of neighbours when bringing pets.

On upkeep, most guests call the house exceptionally clean, but the exceptions matter for dog owners: reviews describe rugs smelling of dog and hair on bed linen in one bedroom, grubbiness around the patio and hot-tub area, and a sense of being brushed off when it was raised. It is worth a look round on arrival.
