Striding Edge, Windermere

Striding Edge is a timber lodge on a wooded holiday park on the eastern shore of Windermere, and its appeal for dog owners is mostly about what sits outside the door. The lodge has a large raised deck, the park has its own dog-walking area, and the lake is a few minutes away on foot, so the daily routine of getting a dog out never involves loading it back into the car.

Two well-behaved dogs are welcome per booking. There is no fenced garden as such, and the deck does that job instead: guests travelling with dogs consistently describe it as the best feature of the place, roomy enough for a dog to stretch out while everyone else is inside and enclosed enough to leave them settled there. The park itself has a pub, a restaurant, a shop and a play area, which makes it easy to stay put on a wet day rather than driving out for every meal.

The location is genuinely strong. Bowness is roughly ten minutes away by car and Ambleside not much further, with the central Lake District within easy reach, yet the lodge sits among trees and feels private despite the number of homes on the park.

The caveats are worth taking seriously, and they concern upkeep rather than the pet welcome. Changeover cleaning is the recurring theme: guests report arriving to a lodge that needed a going-over, sometimes with dog hair left from earlier stays, and the harshest reports describe it as dirty enough to spoil the stay. The interior is dated and carries more crockery and furniture than the space needs, and the decking turns slippery after heavy rain. The park's pool and sauna are not included in the booking either, but sold as a separate pass, which has caught guests out.
