Stanegarth is a four-star whole house on Ratcliffe Place, a couple of minutes from the middle of Keswick, and it works well for a family or group bringing a dog. You get the run of three floors and your own front door, which spares everyone the shared corridors and lifts that make a hotel hard work with a dog in tow.
Up to two pets are welcome and there is an enclosed patio with furniture at the back, so the dog can go out without a lead first thing. A pet charge is not published, so ask when you book. Guests travelling with dogs describe the house as spotless and in genuinely good condition, and the flat central position is the other thing they keep returning to: shops, restaurants and the start of the lake and fell walks are all within an easy stroll, which matters when the dog needs a proper turn morning and evening.
Inside there is more room than most Keswick lets manage, with two en-suites plus a separate main bathroom, a well-equipped kitchen and comfortable beds. The stairs across three floors are the trade-off, and are worth thinking about for an older dog.
Two caveats are worth having in advance. The back area is gravelled with no outside tap, so it can hold odour in warm weather where dogs have used it; bring a water carrier if that would bother you. And while there is usually space on the road outside, Keswick street parking is not reserved and is first come, first served, so on a busy week you may be carrying bags in from a nearby street.
