Sandbar, Roseland

Sandbar is a roomy holiday house on the Roseland peninsula in south Cornwall, within easy reach of Portscatho and St Mawes, and it works well for a family bringing one dog who want space and a quieter stretch of coast. It sleeps a family without anyone feeling on top of each other, and it comes well equipped, down to games for the evenings.

The dog terms are specific. One dog can stay, or two very small ones, up to a maximum weight of 35 kg, and there is a charge of £25 per pet for the stay. With a single dog that is a flat £25 however long you book.

Guests travelling with dogs are positive about the house itself: spacious, with good views, and set up so you can arrive, unpack and relax. A practical tip that comes up is to pick up firewood, kindling and milk at the garage on the way in, so the first evening needs no further trip out.

The one point dog owners should know before booking is the garden. It is small and pleasant but not completely enclosed, so a dog that wanders or bolts will need watching while it is out there.

The Roseland is good dog country. The South West Coast Path runs along this shore, there are beaches and coves a short drive away, and Portscatho and St Mawes are close by for a harbour walk or a pub lunch. Truro is the nearest town for bigger shops. Some Cornish beaches restrict dogs over the summer, so check the signs before heading down to the sand.
