Rowan Lodge, Windermere

Rowan Lodge is a self-catering lodge at Limefitt Park in Troutbeck, a few minutes north of Windermere and properly inside the national park. The park is the reason to book it with a dog: there is a dog walking field on site, and the pub on the park keeps a dedicated area for dogs, so an evening meal does not mean leaving the dog in the lodge or driving somewhere. Up to two dogs can stay, and the lodge sits on a corner plot with its own decking and no through traffic.

The walking is the other draw. The Troutbeck valley, the Garburn Pass and the Kentmere round all start close by for a dog that needs real mileage, and Ambleside, Bowness and the head of Windermere are a short drive. Guests consistently describe the setting as secluded and quiet, with woodland behind the plot and views from the deck.

The caveat is housekeeping, and it is persistent rather than a one-off. Guests have arrived to find the lodge needing a clean before they could unpack, with washing-up not done properly, stained bedding and towels, and dog hair left behind from previous stays, including inside the grill. Others have flagged damp in the bathroom and bedroom corners, dust, and a kitchen and bathroom well overdue an upgrade. For dog owners that cuts both ways: it confirms the park genuinely takes dogs, but it also means the lodge is not always deep-cleaned between them, which matters if anyone in your party reacts to dog hair. Bring cleaning kit and check the place over on arrival.

The 4.1 out of 5 paw rating reflects that split. The dog provision at Limefitt is good and the location is excellent, while the lodge itself is dated and the cleaning is unreliable.

Best suited to owners of one or two dogs booking Limefitt for the walking field, the on-park pub and the valley on the doorstep, who will not be upset by a tired interior. Less suited to anyone who wants to walk in and relax without inspecting the place first.
