Kessock, Windermere

Kessock is a whole-house holiday let on the quiet southern stretch of Windermere, a few minutes from Newby Bridge, and the format does most of the work for anyone travelling with a dog. You have the entire house to yourselves, so there are no shared corridors, no other guests to work around at breakfast and no reception desk to walk a wet dog past. Two well-behaved pets can stay, which is more generous than most Lake District lets of this size allow.

The one thing to plan around is the garden. It runs down to the water and is not enclosed, so dogs need supervising whenever they are outside rather than being let out to potter on their own. That suits a settled, reliable dog better than a young one that bolts. For walking, the position is the draw. Quiet lanes and footpaths lead straight from the door, and the Winster valley country east of the lake is gentler underfoot than the central fells if you have an older dog. Bowness and Windermere are a short drive north for shops, boat trips and dog-friendly pubs.

Access is steep and tight in places, worth knowing if you are arriving in a large vehicle, and the house is big enough that a couple with one dog will find it more space than they need.
