Wayside Cottage Clappersgate Ambleside

Wayside Cottage is a self-catering cottage at Clappersgate, on the edge of Ambleside where the road runs down towards Rothay Bridge and Loughrigg. The whole cottage is let to one party, so there are no shared corridors or lounges to negotiate with a dog, and the walking starts at the door: a path directly outside climbs to Todd Crag and on to Loughrigg Fell, and Ambleside itself is a short walk away for a first-thing outing before breakfast.

Dogs are welcome with an additional charge, and the owners ask that pets stay downstairs and out of the bedrooms. That is a normal arrangement for a period cottage with soft furnishings upstairs, and it is worth planning for if your dog usually sleeps beside the bed - bring a bed or a crate for the ground floor.

The cottage itself is well set up for a stay of several days. Guests describe it as exceptionally well equipped, with a generous kitchen, logs provided for the fire, and a welcome bottle and biscuits waiting on arrival. It is clean and full of character, with a written history covering the cottage's links to Wordsworth, and there is parking for two cars a few metres from the door, which helps when you are unloading a wet dog and a week's worth of kit.

This is a small property with a short review history, so there is less collective experience to draw on here than at a busy hotel. What is clear is the shape of the place: a whole-house let with fell walking from the doorstep and a pet policy that is spelled out rather than left vague. Best suited to walkers who want a base within striking distance of Ambleside and do not mind their dog sleeping downstairs.
