Tyn Llwyn, Llangollen

Tyn Llwyn is a hillside cottage above the Dee valley near Glyndyfrdwy, between Corwen and Llangollen, and the setting is the whole point. The house stands high and private with views down the valley from every aspect, a hot tub angled at the same view, a wood burner for the evenings and a garden that is completely fenced. Sheep and cattle graze right up to it.

In practice the owner has gone further for guests who asked ahead: parties arriving with three dogs and with four have been accommodated by prior arrangement, so it is worth asking rather than treating the listing figure as a ceiling.

The fenced garden is what dog owners single out. It means dogs can be let out rather than led out, which in open sheep country counts for more than usual. Guests are also permitted to walk the surrounding fields on the condition that dogs stay on leads, and there is livestock in nearly all of them.

The owner is described as quick to reply and generous without hovering, and there is usually a welcome pack waiting. A second holiday property stands alongside, close by but screened, so the sense of privacy holds.

The remoteness is the trade-off and also the draw. There is little in walking distance, the drive up is steep and narrow, and the nearest towns are a short run away - Llangollen for the canal and the steam railway, Corwen in the other direction. That isolation makes it a repeat booking for owners of dogs who cannot cope with fireworks, who come back each bonfire season for the quiet. The only complaint of any substance is that the outdoor seating does not live up to the garden. It suits a family or a group of friends with two or more dogs who want space, a secure garden and hills to walk straight into.
