Tree House, Bowness-on-Windermere

Tree House is a four-star self-catering lodge on Fallbarrow Holiday Park at Bowness-on-Windermere, set among trees with a partial view of the lake. The pull for a dog owner is the porch: it is enclosed and secure, gets both sun and shade through the day, and looks out into the trees, so a dog can be out there with you rather than shut inside while you sit out.

One well-behaved pet is welcome. The park sits within an easy walk of Bowness itself, which means the pubs, the lake shore and the pier are all reachable on foot, and there is a Tesco about six minutes away for topping up mid-week. Guests rate the lodge highly for comfort - good heating, comfortable furniture and bedding, and a terrace worth using - and the walkable location comes up in nearly every account.

Two smaller things to know. The WiFi has been unreliable and slow, and some of the outside lighting has been reported out of action, which is worth knowing if you are walking a dog back to the lodge after dark. Dog-specific feedback so far comes from a single stay rather than a run of them, so treat the secure porch as the reliable fact and the rest of the pet experience as less well established than the lodge's general reviews.

Best suited to a couple with one dog who want a walkable Bowness base and somewhere secure to sit outside with them.
