Travelodge Caernarfon

Travelodge Caernarfon has one of the better positions of any budget hotel in north Wales for anyone walking a dog. It sits on Balaclava Road right at the Victoria Dock waterfront, a few minutes on foot from the castle, the town walls and the shops, so a stay here means you can leave the car parked and do everything with the dog on the lead beside you.

Dogs stay for £25 per pet, per stay, with up to two pets on a booking and assistance dogs travelling free. Pets cannot be left alone in the room, so evenings out have to include the dog. Feedback from guests who brought one is positive, with the location the standout, and that fits: the waterfront path and the open ground around the town walls make easy, flat, on-lead walks straight from the door, and the Welsh Highland Railway terminus is a few minutes away.

This is a town-centre hotel, so there is no garden or grounds and nowhere for off-lead time on site. For something longer, the Menai shoreline heading north and the lanes towards Coed Helen across the footbridge both get you into open country quickly. Two supermarkets sit around the corner, which is handy when you have run out of dog food.

The one thing to sort before you arrive is the car. There is no hotel car park, and the nearest public car parks charge for the night, which several guests have found irritating. Best suited to owners who want an affordable, genuinely walkable base in Caernarfon itself and are content with a standard hotel room. Less suited to anyone wanting outdoor space at the property or a self-catering set-up with a garden. It earns a 4.4 out of 5 paw rating.
