Tranquil Retreat, River Valley Park

Tranquil Retreat is a spacious, modern holiday lodge inside River Valley Country Park, a quiet rural park near Relubbus in west Cornwall, a short drive from Penzance and St Ives. It is a genuinely dog-friendly base, and the standout feature for owners is the park itself: there is a large designated dog-walking field on site, so a proper run is never more than a few steps from the door.

Guests travelling with dogs describe a peaceful, uncrowded setting that suits dogs and owners alike, with a comfortable, well-equipped lodge and a veranda to sit out on. The host earns warm praise for being kind, helpful and quick to reply, and key collection from a lockbox makes arrival straightforward whatever time you get in. Up to two dogs can stay.

The park sets clear rules and they are worth reading before you arrive. Dogs must be on a lead everywhere on the park, they are not allowed in the shop, reception or launderette, and they must never be left unsupervised anywhere on site. Breeds covered by the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 are not accepted.

One caveat is worth stating plainly, because it comes from guests rather than the park. More than one visitor who arrived without a dog has reported that previous dogs had left their mark, with a lingering smell and stray hairs inside the lodge, alongside occasional lapses in the cleaning such as marked bedding. If you are bringing your own dog this will bother you far less, and most guests found the lodge clean, comfortable and modern overall, but anyone sensitive to smells should go in knowing it.

Tranquil Retreat suits couples and small families with one or two dogs who want a quiet, spacious country-park base with excellent on-site walking and an attentive host, within easy reach of Penzance, St Ives and the west Cornwall coast. It earns a 4.5/5 paw rating.
