How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 18 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 107 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 8.4/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: October 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.
Pet-friendly summary
Threshers Barn and Shire Horse Barn are rustic converted barns in a lovely spot for walking dogs. A bridleway runs from the property onto open heath and woodland, and guests travelling with dogs repeatedly call it one of the best inland dog-walking locations they have found, with miles of quiet paths straight from the door. The Broads are about twenty minutes away and the north Norfolk coast about half an hour. It earns a 4.2/5 paw rating.
The owner is responsive and helpful, and there are horses next door, plus the owner's own dogs and a cat around the farm. Several guests found the barns spacious, comfortable and good for a family with a dog.
The outdoor space needs checking before you book, because experiences vary between the two barns. Some guests had a gated, enclosed garden that suited their dog well. Others found their garden open to the drive or the neighbouring barn, the entrance gate shared, and the road close by, so they could not leave a dog loose. Most seriously, one visiting dog on a lead was attacked by another guest's dog in the shared car park, beside a garden that was not fenced off. If your dog is reactive or you are sharing the site, keep dogs on leads in communal areas. Guests have also reported a house rule that dogs stay downstairs rather than in bedrooms, so check this if your dog sleeps with you.
The interiors are the other weak point. Repeated reports describe dated fittings, a dripping shower, erratic hot water, broken locks and fittings, cobwebs and cleaning that falls short, and underfloor heating on a timer that can leave the barn cold on arrival.
For walkers who prize location over polish and have a sociable dog, these barns offer superb countryside on the doorstep, but go in with realistic expectations about upkeep.
