The Scott

The Scott is a country-house-style hotel on the University of Edinburgh's Holyrood campus, a short walk from the southern gate of Holyrood Park. That gives dogs 650 acres of open hill, the paths around St Margaret's Loch and the climb up Arthur's Seat, none of it needing a car or a bus, which is about as good as an Edinburgh city break gets for a walker.

Dogs stay for £30 per dog, and unusually that covers a stay of up to seven nights rather than being charged nightly, so a full week here costs less than two nights at most city hotels. The policy is dogs only, other pets are not accepted, and dogs must not be left unattended in the room.

Rooms near the bar turn out quieter than they sound on paper. The hotel is set up for arriving by car, with outdoor parking and charging points on site, though spaces can be tight at busy times. Breakfast is well regarded, if light on vegan options.

It suits owners who want a proper daily walk and a quiet base, and who are happy that the Royal Mile is a twenty-minute stroll or a short bus ride rather than out of the front door.
