The Linhay is a self-catering cottage in the hills a few miles east of Bridport, and the detail that matters most for dog owners is the enclosed yard. Being able to let a dog out last thing at night without a lead, and without driving anywhere, is the kind of thing that counts for more on a week-long stay than it sounds like it should.
The cottage is let whole, so there are no shared spaces, and guests consistently describe it as cosy, clean and better equipped than expected: a proper kitchen, bedding and towels included, and the small consumables - tea, coffee, sugar, washing liquid, hand wash, toilet roll - already there rather than on a shopping list. A cream tea and a welcome card on arrival come up repeatedly, and the owner is warmly spoken of and easy to deal with.
Outside there is a big open area for walking dogs and a long view across the valley, with easy parking at the property itself. Bridport and West Bay are a short drive west, which puts the coast path and the dog-friendly beaches within reach without staying on top of them.
Two caveats are worth knowing before booking. The cottage sits close enough to the main road that traffic noise carries, and guests have found it more noticeable than they expected - relevant if your dog reacts to road noise as much as you do. The bedroom is up a flight of stairs with the bathroom below, which is worth thinking about for an older dog, and the shower has drawn complaints. Best suited to couples or a small family with one or two dogs who want a secure yard, a quiet valley view and the Dorset coast a short drive away.
