Pet-friendly summary

1 Sunny Point Cottages is a beautifully done traditional cottage in Crook, the village on the back road between Kendal and Windermere, and it takes two dogs. The renovation is what people notice first: original features kept, everything else brought up to date, three double bedrooms and enough room for six adults without anyone tripping over a dog.

The honest caveat is the setting. The cottage sits between two roads, one of them a B road carrying more traffic than a village lane has any right to, and the front garden is small with a low wall between it and the carriageway. Dog owners who have stayed here all say a version of the same thing: keep the dogs close at the front, and treat the garden as somewhere to sit rather than somewhere to let them potter unsupervised. Reaching the pub or open walking means a stretch alongside that road on foot.

If your dog is reliable on a lead and you plan to drive out each day, none of that is fatal, and the position is genuinely useful. Crook is ten minutes from Bowness for the Windermere ferry, with Hawkshead and Grizedale on the far side, and Kendal, Sizergh Castle and the Lyth Valley the other way. There are dog-friendly options in every direction, and the cottage is a good place to come back to, warm and comfortable, with a well-equipped kitchen and beds that guests go out of their way to praise.

Two practical notes. Access is up steps on either side of the house, which rules it out for anyone with mobility problems and makes it awkward with a very old or very large dog. Parking takes two cars, with village parking a couple of hundred metres away for a third.

Best for a group of up to six bringing a dog or two who want a smart southern-Lakes base and expect to be out in the car most days.
