Independent pet-friendly review by Four Legged Guests ยท updated June 2026 ยท paw rating built from 3 verified guest reviews mentioning pets
Bring your dog if
- You want a whole-property rental - no shared lobbies or corridors to navigate with your dog
- You're basing yourself in Penrith / the Lake District and want a pet-friendly anchor for day trips
- The wider guest experience is strong - Agoda guests rate this 9.9/10 overall
Worth knowing
- Paw rating is based on 3 reviews - limited sample, treat as directional
- Pet fee and any size restrictions aren't published - confirm directly with the property before booking
How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 3 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from Agoda - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 7 Agoda guest reviews overall, averaging 9.9/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: June 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.
Pet-friendly summary
Stable Cottage is the smallest of three converted cottages at Barton Hall Farm just outside Pooley Bridge at the northern end of Ullswater (CA10 2NG). A 1-bedroom cottage sleeping 2, it's the right Barton Hall option for a couple travelling with one or two dogs (sister properties Stone Barn sleeps 4 and Mill Moor sleeps 7 if you need more space).
The pet policy is the same as the sister cottages: up to two dogs welcome with a pet fee charged (the listings don't disclose the amount, so confirm with hosts Amanda + Nigel when booking). No breed or size restrictions documented.
The on-site dog infrastructure is the headline shared across all three Barton Hall properties: an outdoor dog shower (warm water, invaluable after a wet fell walk) and a welcome pack on arrival. The shared barn next door also has a washing machine, drier and large freezer - practical for longer stays with muddy dogs.
One nice touch specific to a 1BR cottage with dogs: the cosy single-bedroom layout means your dog stays in earshot of you overnight without taking over a separate room. The enclosed setting also means the garden is easy to monitor without leaving the cottage.
Location-wise, the cottage is about a 15-minute walk across the fields to Pooley Bridge village, with the Ullswater Way path accessible from the door for longer walks. The High Street fell range is a mile away; the bigger Lakeland walks (Helvellyn, Place Fell, etc.) are within driving distance. Pooley Bridge has cafes, two pubs, a bookshop and a local-produce store. Penrith is 6 miles for proper market-town shopping.
A practical note for spring stays: it's a working farm with Limousin cattle and Texel sheep, and lambing happens roughly March - May. If you have a herding-breed dog (collie, sheepdog, similar), chat to Amanda and Nigel at arrival so you know which fields to keep your dog out of during lambing season. Reviewers consistently mention the farm being well-kept and the working-farm character adding to the stay rather than detracting.
Hosts Amanda and Nigel are mentioned warmly across the review pool - multiple guests are on their 4th, 5th or 7th return visit, which is the strongest signal a self-catering property can carry. The cottage is described consistently as cosy, comfortable, clean and well-equipped; Joanna's November 2023 review is worth reading for the long-stay detail (she got there by public transport).
Best suited to a couple with one or two dogs who want a quiet Ullswater base with the shared Barton Hall dog amenities, who'll appreciate the working-farm character and door-step walking. The 4.7/5 paw rating reflects three confirmed pet-traveller stays plus the substantively above-average on-site dog infrastructure - one of the strongest Cumbria pet-friendly signals across the FLG portfolio, alongside the two sibling cottages.
