Pet-friendly summary
Slade House is a spacious farmhouse on a working farm near Waterhouses, on the Staffordshire side of the Peak District, and it is one of those places where families bring the dogs along year after year. Groups describe it as a proper home from home with walks from the doorstep, and it holds a 4.8/5 paw rating. Up to three pets are allowed.
What stands out is how far the owners, who live on the farm, will go to make dogs fit in. The garden is large, but not every part of it is fully enclosed, and dog owners describe sheep gates and fencing being put up across steps and around the smaller front garden so a puppy or a cockapoo could not slip out. If you need a secure space, mention it when you book.
The welcome is generous too, with homemade cake and brownies, milk, fizz and flowers waiting on arrival, and the owners are quick to answer a text if anything comes up. Inside, the farmhouse kitchen has a log burner, the bedrooms are comfortable and there is room for a big party with children and several dogs.
Walking is the main draw. Footpaths cross the fields almost from the back door, and Dovedale and Ilam Park are close by. The one firm rule is that dogs need to be on a lead in the fields because sheep graze there, so a long training lead is worth packing. There are also friendly farm dogs and other animals about, which suits most dogs but is worth knowing if yours is reactive.
For a family or group with dogs looking for a well-run countryside base in the southern Peak District, Slade House is a very easy recommendation.
