  • Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
  • Wider context: The property has 200 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 7.9/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.

Pet-friendly summary

Rydal Lodge is a characterful old guesthouse between Ambleside and Grasmere, and for walkers with dogs its setting is about as good as the Lake District gets. The garden runs down to the river, Rydal Water is a couple of minutes away, and the Coffin Trail, Loughrigg Fell and the lakeshore paths all start from the door. When things go well, guests with dogs love it: the host shares walk guides and local tips, and dogs are often treated to a sausage of their own at breakfast.

Up to two dogs of any size are accepted, for a one-off pet charge of £8 per stay. Dogs must not be left alone in the room, and you should ring ahead on 01539 433208 to confirm a dog-friendly room before booking. A recent guest reported being charged far more than they were quoted for their dog, so get the fee confirmed in writing.

The building is the big caveat. It is a Grade II listed house with low ceilings, sloping floors and stone flags, which some guests find charming and others find tired. Reviews over the past year have become more mixed: several winter guests found no working heating, damp smells and grubby carpets, and at least two stays went without breakfast because the host was unwell. Visitors have also mentioned a cluttered entrance, peeling paint and an overflowing dog waste bin in the car park. Rooms can be snug for two people and a dog, and you may want to bring your own towel and water bowl.

The location remains the reason to go. The Badger Bar at the Glen Rothay Hotel is a short walk down the road for a meal, the Rydal Hall tearoom is a few minutes away, and buses to Ambleside, Grasmere and beyond stop right outside, making a car-free break easy.

It suits hardy walkers with one or two dogs who put the location first and are relaxed about an old, unpolished house. Anyone who wants reliable heating and a well-maintained room should look elsewhere in Ambleside. It holds a 3.6 out of 5 paw rating.
