Pet-friendly summary
Pound Cottage is a peaceful North Devon hideaway that dog owners rave about, and its 4.9/5 paw rating reflects how consistently happy they are. The star attraction is the garden: long, wide and open to countryside views, with plenty of room for a dog to run. Guests whose dogs have poor recall found it secure enough to let them roam, and several came back for a second stay.
The welcome is thoughtful. There is a cupboard of dog essentials, including dog towels and beach towels, and guests describe the owner, Jenny, as warm and generous with local tips, from woodland walks around Torrington to dog-friendly beaches such as Instow. Inside, the cottage is described as immaculate and very well equipped, with a wet-room bathroom and a ramp up to the door. Bookings are for one dog.
The setting is genuinely rural. Narrow Devon lanes lead out to Bideford, Westward Ho! and Barnstaple, all within about half an hour, so a car is essential, but there is a well-regarded inn nearby for dinner.
Two points are worth weighing before booking. Most guests found the garden secure, but one cautioned that the garden and paddock area is not completely enclosed, so check the boundary before letting an escape artist off the lead. The cottage adjoins the owner's house, and the patio is shared with and overlooked by it, which suits most people but is not fully private. That same guest was also woken early by noise from a working site next door.
For couples wanting a quiet countryside base with a huge garden for their dog and a host who makes them feel at home, Pound Cottage is about as good as it gets.
