Pet-friendly summary
Poplar Cottage is a quiet, private riverside cottage that suits dogs, and especially nervous or reactive ones, very well. Its biggest asset is the garden: fully enclosed and gated, it lets a dog wander in and out of the cottage freely, and guests travelling with everything from a small terrier to a pair of German Shepherds rate it highly for that. The garden runs down to the River Bain, which dogs enjoy on hot days. It earns a 4.8/5 paw rating.
The cottage itself is a characterful stable conversion with vaulted ceilings, original brickwork, a four-poster bed and a good shower, and it is warm and comfortable. The hosts on the farm are welcoming and helpful with local tips, including early check-in on a very hot day for one family.
Walking is excellent. Riverside paths start on the doorstep and lead to the village pub, which is about ten minutes on foot, and Ostler's Plantation nearby is a big, quiet woodland where you can walk for hours without seeing many people. Woodhall Spa and Horncastle are a short drive, the area is rich in RAF heritage sites, and the Lincolnshire coast and its dog-friendly beaches are within an hour.
There are some caveats. The entrance step is awkward for older or less mobile dogs. The rug is deep-pile and not ideal for muddy paws. Cleaning has occasionally slipped, with dust, cobwebs and a lingering doggy smell noted, and a previous guest's uncollected dog mess by the riverside seating spoiled one stay. The cottage is also compact, best for a couple, and the kitchen is stocked for two.
