Norfolk Farm Stays is a relaxed, quirky base for a seaside break with a dog on the west Norfolk coast. The rooms are converted farm buildings and chalets on South Beach Road at Heacham, a couple of miles south of Hunstanton, and the beach is only a short stroll from the gate. Second, the welcome: the owner and his team are friendly, helpful with tips on where to eat, and happy for dogs to come into the breakfast room. Third, the breakfast itself, a self-service spread with fresh eggs from the farm's own hens that you can eat in the breakfast room or take back to your room. Some rooms have a small secure garden to let a dog out, and owners of larger dogs, Labradors included, have stayed happily.

The surroundings are quiet, and there is nowhere to eat within walking distance, so plan on a short drive to Heacham, Hunstanton or nearby dog-friendly pubs, and book ahead in busy months.

It is not polished, and the reviews are honest about that. Several guests mention cobwebs, damp or peeling paint in some units, weak or temperamental showers and floors that could be cleaner. One family who stayed without a dog found dog hair on the floors and surfaces, so allergy sufferers should think carefully. Breakfast is cook-your-own rather than a full cooked meal, which surprised a few guests, and a broom for sweeping up after a dog is not always provided.

For dog owners who value a beach on the doorstep and an easy-going, animal-friendly atmosphere over boutique finishes, it is a good-value base for exploring Hunstanton and Sandringham.
