Mugwell Barn, Stoke Climsland

Mugwell Barn is a small, cosy barn conversion for two in the hamlet of Luckett, near Stoke Climsland on the Cornwall and Devon border, and it makes a lovely countryside base for a couple and their dog. It earns a 4.9/5 paw rating, and dog owners come away talking about how much room their dogs had to run.

The big draw is the field. The patio doors open onto a lawn and a stock-fenced paddock beside the barn, where dogs can come off the lead well away from roads and farm animals. The area right outside the barn is not a fully secure garden, though, so dogs need watching when the doors are open; several owners kept theirs on a long line and found that worked well. The listing allows up to two dogs, and guests have reported no extra charge for bringing them.

The hosts live next door and are friendly without hovering, with plenty of tips on dog-friendly pubs, beaches and walks. Most guests arrive to a generous welcome pack, often with homemade scones and cream. Inside there is a super king bed, underfloor heating and a log burner, with enough floor space for a puppy crate. The hosts have dogs of their own on site, which is worth knowing if yours is reactive.

Walks start close by, including a riverside path along the Tamar and a cross-country stroll to the village pub, and both the north and south Cornish coasts are around 35 minutes away by car. Callington, with a supermarket, is about ten minutes' drive.

A few things to know: the lanes are narrow, the barn can get warm in a hot spell, and the grass and gravel outside mean muddy paws on wet days. The welcome is usually generous, though it has slipped on rare occasions.

For a quiet break where the dog gets a proper run every morning and you get a log burner every evening, Mugwell Barn is an easy one to recommend.
