Juliot Luxury Cottage, St Ives

Juliot is a small luxury cottage just off The Digey, about as central as St Ives gets, and it takes one small dog. The whole cottage is yours, which for a dog means no corridors, no lift and no other guests, and although it sits right in the middle of town it is set back behind a secure terraced area, so it feels tucked away rather than exposed to the crowds passing a few feet away.

The pet arrangement is specific: one small, well-behaved dog. That is a real constraint, ruling out larger breeds and second dogs, but it is at least stated plainly rather than left to a phone call.

What the cottage is good at is being a comfortable base for two. The kitchen is properly equipped with a breakfast bar, the linen and towels are good quality, and guests arrive to basics left out - milk, coffee, bread, butter and eggs - which after a long drive into Cornwall is more useful than it sounds. The sitting area is small but comfortable for a couple.

Location is the selling point for a dog owner. The harbour is a few minutes on foot, Porthmeor and Porthgwidden are barely further, and the coast path towards Clodgy Point starts within walking distance. Do check the current beach rules before you travel, as the town beaches carry seasonal dog restrictions over the summer. A compact town-centre cottage with no garden suits a calm, settled dog rather than one that needs space to burn off, so the walking matters.

Only one guest has so far written about staying here with a dog, so there is limited feedback on how it works in practice, though what there is was warm. Best suited to a couple with one small, easy-going dog who want a smart, central St Ives base within a few minutes' walk of the harbour and the coast path.
