Jacks Mews, Tintagel

Jacks Mews is a cottage in the middle of Tintagel, on Cornwall's north coast, and its strongest card for anyone travelling with a dog is that you barely need the car. The village pubs and restaurants are a short walk away and happy to have dogs inside, the shops are closer still, and the cliff path around Tintagel Castle and Barras Nose opens up serious coastal walking a few minutes from the door. Guests come back year after year, several booking the next stay before they leave.

Up to two pets can stay. No pet charge is published on the property's booking listing, so agree the current arrangement with the owner when you book. The cottage is a whole-house rental with parking for two cars, a well-equipped kitchen and a comfortable lounge, which suits a dog that likes to settle in one place rather than negotiate shared corridors.

The garden is small, which is the trade-off for the central position. For guests who spend their days out on the coast path that matters little, but a dog that needs space to potter unsupervised would be better served somewhere with a bigger plot.

Cleanliness on changeover is the one recurring theme worth flagging. Separate stays have reported arriving to dog hair left across the sitting-room floor, a vacuum cleaner already full and unusable, and dog mess not cleared from the rear of the property. Others have simply wanted a working vacuum available so they could tidy up after their own dog before leaving. None of it has put the regulars off, but it is worth a look round on arrival and a word with the owner if anything needs sorting. It earns a 4.5/5 paw rating.
