Hares Haven, Patrington

Hares Haven is a self-catering holiday lodge on a quiet park at Patrington Haven, in the Holderness corner of East Yorkshire. It sits within easy reach of the Spurn Head nature reserve, the wide Holderness beaches and the wetlands around Kilnsea, so there is plenty of long, open walking a short drive from the door. You take the whole lodge to yourselves, with no shared corridors or communal lounges to steer a dog through, which suits nervous or excitable travellers well.

The thing dog-owning guests return to again and again is the enclosed garden. They describe it as secure and easy to relax in, with decking and outdoor seating that catch the sun, giving dogs somewhere to potter off-lead while everyone else settles in. The hosts lean into the pet-friendly side too: visitors regularly arrive to a welcome pack with treats for the dog and a box of toys to borrow, alongside the usual comforts. A generous freezer draws particular thanks from anyone feeding a raw diet.

Inside, the lodge is spotlessly clean, warm and thoroughly equipped, with two en-suite shower rooms and room for a family plus pets. Guests travelling with dogs routinely bring children and grandchildren along, and report both settling in happily.

A couple of honest caveats. Some visitors have found that when the neighbouring pitch is empty, keener dogs will test the garden boundary, so it is worth watching the more determined escapologists. On-site club and dining facilities have been closed at points after an earlier fire, so it is best to plan meals around the lodge's well-stocked kitchen and the nearby villages. The park itself stays calm, and dog-owning guests describe fellow residents as friendly out on the walking paths.

It is best suited to families and couples who want a clean, well-kept base with a genuinely secure garden and quick access to the Yorkshire coast for their dog, rather than resort-style on-site entertainment.
