Pet-friendly summary
Harbour View is a lovely waterside base for a holiday with dogs on the Dorset-Hampshire border. The bungalow in Mudeford looks straight over Christchurch Harbour and the marshes, and a gate at the bottom of the garden opens onto walks along the water's edge. Guests with dogs rate it almost without exception as one of the best places they have stayed, and it earns a 4.9/5 paw rating.
The enclosed lawned garden is flat and secure, and owners of everything from small terriers to a German Shepherd and a Labrador say their dogs settled straight in. Because it is all on one level, it is easy to keep an eye on a small or elderly dog. The owner meets guests on arrival and is known for her baking: fresh bread, cakes and homemade dog treats appear at the start of the stay, and often again during the week.
The location is the other highlight. There are marsh and coast trails nearby with signs showing where dogs can go off lead, the beaches and Mudeford Spit are close, and the New Forest is a short drive away. Bird watchers love the view, and the kayaks are a hit with families.
It is not perfect for everyone. Parking is tight, and leaving can mean reversing out into a busy road, so practise your reversing. One guest found the sofa uncomfortable, their dog did not settle and they left early, though that is very much the exception here.
For couples or families with one or two dogs who want water views, walks from the garden gate and a genuinely warm welcome for the dogs as well as the people, Harbour View is hard to fault.
