How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 10 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 113 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 9.8/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: August 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.

Pet-friendly summary
Grayling Cottage is a small, high-specification cottage right in the middle of Ambleside, and it is one of the more thoughtfully equipped dog-friendly boltholes in the village. The fit-out is a cut above the usual holiday let, with a proper kitchen, a generous shower and remote-operated skylight blinds in the bedroom, and dogs are clearly part of the plan rather than an exception to it.
One dog is welcome per stay and a charge applies. What owners notice on arrival is that the practical kit is already there: a dog towel and a decent-sized water bowl are left out, and the property information pack covers the rest. There is a small enclosed area outside with a table, useful for letting a dog out off the lead, though it is genuinely tiny and gets little sun.
The location does most of the heavy lifting. The cottage sits just off the main street, so it is quiet at night but only a couple of minutes from pubs, restaurants, a small supermarket and the paths out of town. Dog walks start more or less at the door, which is why owners travelling with dogs keep coming back.
Two caveats come up repeatedly. The dog charge is levied per night rather than per stay, and owners of small, non-shedding dogs in particular have found it steep for what it is. Parking is the other: there is no space at the cottage itself, and although a free permit for a nearby car park is provided, it is a few minutes walk away, which is awkward when you are juggling luggage and a dog on a lead. Housekeeping is generally praised as spotless, but animal hair in the bedding has been reported, so a quick check on arrival is sensible if anyone in your party is sensitive.
Best suited to a couple or small family with one well behaved dog who want a smart, central Ambleside base and will happily trade a driveway for a doorstep location. Grayling Cottage earns a 4.8/5 paw rating.
