Five Cottages in AONB, Hastingleigh

Tucked into the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty above the village of Hastingleigh, this is a small cluster of self-catering cottages set around a converted old sawmill. It suits travellers who want quiet countryside, genuinely dark night skies and easy access to walking country, and a couple of the units are set aside for guests bringing dogs.

Pets are not accepted across the whole group - the owners restrict dogs to two specific two-bedroom houses, so it is worth confirming which cottage you are booking before you travel. Once you are in the right unit, the welcome is the thing guests travelling with dogs mention most: an attentive host couple who are around when you need them but never hovering, and a welcome pack of local produce (bread, butter, jam and coffee) that comes up again and again in feedback.

The cottages themselves read as spotlessly clean and well equipped, with enough room for a couple of adults and two dogs without feeling cramped. The setting is the real draw: properly quiet, dark at night and deep in walking country, with a village pub a short uphill stroll away and more within a short drive. Several dog owners also flag it as a handy overnight stop near the Eurotunnel terminal, with good parking and space for a trailer.

A few practical notes recur, such as a shower over the bath rather than a separate cubicle in at least one cottage and the compact footprint of the smaller units, though neither is a pet issue. Overall it is best suited to dog owners after a peaceful rural base for countryside walks, dark-sky nights or a well-placed stop before an early Channel crossing, rather than anyone wanting on-site facilities or nightlife.
