Pet-friendly summary
Chywolow Lodge is a big timber lodge in the fields above Penzance, out in the far west of Cornwall between St Just and Madron, and it is the sort of place a dog settles into within about five minutes. It is let as a whole property, so there are no corridors or neighbours to work around, and it sits in open countryside with long views in most directions.
Two pets are welcome per booking, and plenty of guests bring exactly that. The lodge is roomy enough for a large family group and a pair of dogs without anyone feeling on top of each other, and dog owners keep coming back. The outdoor space is what they mention first: somewhere to throw a ball before breakfast, and room for children and dogs to share without a scrum. A welcome hamper is waiting on arrival, and the fit-out is consistently described as clean and well stocked, which counts for a lot when a dog comes back wet.
A few practical things are worth knowing. The garden is generous but not fenced, so dogs cannot simply be let out to roam, and returning visitors have asked the owners about fencing the back and sides. There are alpacas at the bottom of the garden and other animals around the site, so a dog that pulls towards livestock will need a lead. The lane up to the lodge is narrow with poor visibility, and a smaller car makes the approach easier. It is also properly dark at night with no street lighting, which most guests count as a plus.
Once you are settled, the walking is the point. St Just, Penzance, St Ives, Hayle and Porthcurno are all within reach, and the ancient sites around West Penwith, among them Chun Castle, Chysauster and Carn Euny, make good half-day outings with a dog. It suits families or groups with one or two steady dogs who want space, quiet and a proper countryside base, and it earns a 4.8/5 paw rating.
