Carne Vue, Penzance

Carne Vue is a whole-house cottage in the countryside above Penzance, near Madron in far west Cornwall, with Sennen, Porthcurno and Land's End a short drive down the lanes. Having the place to yourself makes arriving with a dog straightforward: no shared corridors, no neighbouring rooms, and step-free access throughout that suits older or stiff-jointed dogs as much as it does their owners.

One dog is welcome, at 20 pounds per pet per week on top of the booking. Dog bowls are left ready at the cottage, and the welcome basket that greets guests is a generous one. Two of the house rules are worth knowing before committing: pets are not allowed on the beds or the furniture, and they must not be left alone in the cottage or its garden at any point, so this is not a base for days out that a dog cannot join. The garden is not fully enclosed either, which matters if yours is inclined to follow a scent.

The setting is the reason to come. This is proper rural Penwith, all single-track lanes, hedged fields and open moorland edges, with a smallholding just up the path where alpacas, a pony and a pair of rhea birds live, which is a novelty most dogs find hard to walk past. Footpaths lead straight out from the door, and the dog-friendly beaches around Sennen and Porthcurno are within easy reach for a proper run.

It carries a 4.5/5 paw rating. Carne Vue suits owners after a quiet, off-the-beaten-track base for exploring the far west, and dogs happy with country lanes rather than pavements. Anyone nervous about narrow rural driving, or who wants shops and pubs within walking distance, would be better served closer to Penzance itself.
