Pet-friendly summary
Butterdon Barn is a converted barn on a working farm just outside Moretonhampstead, in the heart of Dartmoor, and it is about as dog-friendly as a holiday cottage gets. The big draw is a large, fully enclosed garden surrounded by fields, so dogs can run free without anyone worrying about gates, and guests have also been welcome to walk dogs in an adjoining field. It earns a 4.8/5 paw rating.
The owners live on the farm and get warm praise for a friendly welcome followed by plenty of privacy. A tray of tea, homemade jam, shortbread or flapjacks and fresh farm eggs usually greets arrivals, often with treats for the dogs too, and the owners are on hand if anything is needed. The peace and quiet suits anxious dogs, and several guests have chosen it specifically to escape bonfire-night fireworks.
Walking is the other highlight. Footpaths and quiet lanes lead straight from the door, the open moor is close by, and Moretonhampstead, around half an hour away on foot, has several pubs that welcome dogs. A hot tub on the patio is a popular way to finish a day outdoors.
A few practical points. Dogs are not allowed upstairs, though a stairgate is provided to keep them downstairs overnight. The approach is a long, narrow single-track lane with high hedges, which some drivers find tricky. The farm keeps cows, sheep, horses and chickens, so keep a close eye on dogs with a strong chase instinct once outside the garden. Wi-Fi and mobile signal have historically been absent, which most guests count as a bonus rather than a drawback.
For a quiet Dartmoor break with one or two dogs who love space, Butterdon Barn is hard to beat.
