Pet-friendly summary

Adams House is a snug, well-kept farm cottage that suits a couple and their dog very well. It is attached to the owners' farmhouse on a quiet working farm near Coldingham, and guests travelling with dogs rate it highly, with a 4.8/5 paw rating.

Up to two dogs can stay. The welcome pack covers the dog as well as the people, with a bowl, towel, treats and poo bags left out, and the hosts are described as friendly and on hand without being intrusive. Their collie is a regular, gentle presence around the yard.

The big draw for dog owners is the garden. Guests have use of their own enclosed, grassed area, which several describe as fully fenced and safe enough for a dog to run around and toilet without supervision. It is not reached directly from the house, so you step outside to get to it. The farm is very quiet at night, and one couple returned specifically to keep a firework-phobic dog away from the bangs at home.

The coast is the reason to come. Coldingham Bay is a sandy, unspoilt beach, the clifftop path runs on to the harbour and nature reserve at St Abbs, and longer walks head to the lighthouse or to Eyemouth. Guests have walked from the cottage to the bay and along to St Abbs, roughly seven miles in all.

The catch is getting out of the farm on foot. The lane into the village is a country road with no pavement, so care is needed walking a dog along it, and at least one guest found they could not really walk their dog from the door and drove to walks instead. Plan on having a car. One guest also disputed the advertised sea view.

Best for a couple with one or two dogs who want a secure garden, a peaceful farm setting and some of the best coastal walking in the Borders a few minutes' drive away.
